It’s only been around 48 short hours since the launch of Apple’s Ping social music network, and the service has already managed to get one million users. According to Apple’s Chief of Internet stuff, Eddy Cue, those one million Ping accounts make up 1/3 of iTunes downloads. If you crunch those numbers you’ll find out iTunes 10 has already had 3 million downloads. Read more...

I'll admit it. I'll buy almost anything Apple makes. I was going to hold out on the iPad, but after reading more about it, I wound up in line the first day it was for sale. As they say, resistance is futile. That's not the case with the Apple TV. When Apple brings a product out, I expect a small revolution. Some exciting new concept, or new and unique feature. As Mr. Jobs promised, iOS 4.1 brings many speed improvements to the older iPhone 3G, illustrated by Lifehacker: While UI responsiveness improved dramatically, there was also improvement in specific apps with Maps showing the most improvement. Messages: iOS 4.1 Wins (By a Little) Maps: iOS 4.1 Wins (By a Lot) Photos: iOS 4.1 Wins (Just Barely) Safari: iOS 4. Read more...

Seems like only yesterday that Linux was vastly outpacing iOS in terms of how many were using it as a browsing platform. Actually, make that last November; at that time, Linux's presence more than doubled the total iOS stake. Now, iOS-based browsers claim 1.13 percent of all browsing platforms, compared to a declining 0.85 percent for Linux. To the right is a screengrab from Google Analytics, as I see traffic coming to one of my own websites. Read more...

Analyst Katy Huberty from Morgan Stanley tells All Things D that she believes Apple is ramping up production on the iPad, aiming to build as many as three million a month by the end of this year. That would mean that the company could make 36 million iPads next year, which brings the total close to (but not quite) the whopping 40 million units predicted by her supply chain analysis. Apple has opened a Trailer Showtimes site today that uses browser location settings both on desktop and mobile devices to deliver showtimes. You’ll be prompted to let the browser access your GPS information, whether that is your geo-located IP or your device’s dedicated GPS. This not only works on iOS devices but works on other mobile platforms as well and provides a slick way to navigate movies, especially when integrated with Apple’s high-definition trailers sites. If you depend on Automator workflows for managing music or other tasks in iTunes, the upgrade to version 10 may have come as a bit of a cold shock. Macworld pointed out that most available workflows for iTunes simply would not load with iTunes 10; a frustrating circumstance, to be sure. Fortunately, the problem turns out not to be that complicated; Automator's version checking thinks that iTunes 10.0 is a lower version than 9.0, because the versions are sorting alphabetically instead of numerically (oof!). Apple announced iOS 4.1 to a big hooray from iPhone 3G owners, since the iOS 4.1 update supposedly fixes the speed problems on the 3G. But how does the iPhone 3G actually run with iOS 4.1? I like real world tests, and this video from LifeHacker demonstrates the speed of the 3G with iOS 4.1. iOS 4.1 + iPhone 3G performance If you own an iPhone 3G and you are running iOS 4, you’ve certainly suffered from the performance and speed issues. Reiterating much of the iOS presentation by Steve Jobs, a new web page adds a few details to what iOS 4.2 brings in November. As Steve Jobs said, “it’s all about iPad,” and that’s a shame because it should be about the cloud. iOS 4.2′s major features include multitasking, folders, wireless printing, and AirPlay, the latter a renaming and expansion of AirTunes to include video.
